A guide to events coming up in Summer 2010

Get out and about this summer

Summer is a great time to consider taking your group away to an event organised by wider church organisations. Aside from our own Lumos weekend, here are some other upcoming summer events for you to consider booking in for...

Brightlights (16th – 19th July) is the annual festival for 16-30 year olds run by the Diocese of Westminster. There will be top quality music, inspirational speakers, practical workshops and opportunities for prayer and liturgy, all themed around the journey of St Alban. A weekend not to be missed! Explore the website for more details www.brightlights.org.uk

Festival Sanctus (24th – 29th July) is organised by the Sion Community, and brings together around 200 young people, giving a more intimate feel that many bigger events.  It is a place to meet new friends and to spend time with God. During the week people gather in small groups, play games, eat great food, experience God, receive great teaching, camp in a garden(!) find ways of praying that help in real life and potentially leave seeing the world from a different view point. Visit their website www.festivalsanctus.com where prices and other details will be listed soon.

Soul Survivor (30th July – 20th August over 3 camps) is the biggest event for young Christians in the UK – some 28,000 attended last year.  It happens over 3 weeks in different venues and is attended by thousands of teenagers, students and young adults. There are some great bands as well as excellent speakers.  Of course there is also time for you to meet new people and develop existing friendships. The cost is depends on when you book and where you stay. Their really helpful website covers all your likely questions (and a few you might not have thought of) so why not visit www.soulsurvivor.com/uk

Over 3,000 people gather annually for New Dawn (2nd – 7th August), a Charismatic conference, taking place at Walsingham in Norfolk. Activities include daily Mass, a Rosary Walk, Healing and Reconciliation services as well as various speakers in different youth and adult streams. The cost of £85 is a donation and those who cannot afford to pay this amount can contribute what they can afford.  Registration forms can be obtained via their website www.newdawn.org.uk

At Westminster Cathedral on 6th and 9th August, Pax Christi are holding a special prayer vigil and stall for the anniversary of the atomic bombs dropping on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  For details of this visit their website www.paxchristi.org.uk

Greenbelt (27th – 30th August) is a Christian Arts Festival held at Cheltenham Racecourse over the August Bank holiday weekend.  Speakers for 2010 include Priest Richard Rohr, theologian Stanley Hauaerwas, Claire Short MP and civil rights activist Peter Tatchell.  Comedian Milton Jones, poet Roger McGough and author Francis Spufford are just a few of the artists who will be performing.  There will be many bands, different styles of worship including Benedictine Meditation, Messy Church or time with the Quakers.  All this plus various exhibition tents for you to visit as well as ‘Cardboard Wars’ –  no idea what that it but it sounds fun!  Visit their website www.greenbelt.org.uk

At the same time as Greenbelt, Youth 2000 run their popular annual youth conference at Walsingham. Details are not currently available, but keep checking their website at www.youth2000.org to find information.
